He was born in P\u0159\u00edlepy near Hole\u0161ov. He grew up in Hodon\u00edn where his family moved in 1921. He graduated from a secondary school there. After his school-leaving exam and the closing of universities in 1939, he did a variety of jobs, including half a year at the archbishop\u00b4s sawmill in Ostravice. From 1941 he worked as a technician at a land improvement company in Poho\u0159elice. After the war, he completed eight semesters at the University of Technology of Dr E. Bene\u0161 in Brno, where he successfully passed his first state examinations in July 1947, but his studies were terminated by political screenings in 1949.<\/p>\n

Then he worked at the Institute for Architecture and Regional Planning (\u00daA\u00daP), which was incorporated into the Research Institute of Building Engineering and Architecture (V\u00daVA) in 1954. In 1957, he moved to the State Institute for the Reconstruction of Historical Cities and Monuments (S\u00daRPMO), where he began to research and document the historical core of Prague. Among the projects in which he took part during that period he appreciated the survey of the monastery in P\u0159edkl\u00e1\u0161te\u0159\u00ed near Ti\u0161nov. He also succeeded in getting his own group for the research and documentation of vernacular architecture, a discipline which he began to observe at the Faculty of Architecture and with which he also dealt at the \u00daA\u00daP and V\u00daVA. In the studio of vernacular architecture which he then led until his retirement, he produced a large number of documentation and surveys ranging from inventory to historic structure analysis works. He created hundreds of simple surveys at a scale of 1:100 and dozens of elaborate surveys whose characteristic handwriting is also artistically remarkable and unmistakable.<\/p>\n

His entire professional career is connected with documentation of and historical research into vernacular architecture. His publications are mainly based on his research activities in the regions of Slov\u00e1cko, Pomorav\u00ed and Podyj\u00ed, in Wallachia, in the \u0160umperk area and in the region of Vyso\u010dina. Together with Zden\u011bk Mi\u0161urec and Zden\u011bk Zast\u00e1vka, he participated in the model of vernacular buildings classification, which stood at the birth of computer processing of data on these buildings, even though he never learned to use a computer.<\/p>\n

An important component in Vajdi\u0161’s work is his artistic output. He dealt with drawing and, marginally, painting, but it is his photographic work that is especially appreciated; he focussed on landscapes and natural details, in addition to vernacular architecture and villages, and he did not ignore people and animals. He received his theoretical training at the Czech Club of Amateur Photographers (\u010cKFA) in Brno. After arriving in Prague in 1949, he was also a member of its national committee. His photographs were presented at many domestic and international exhibitions. According to his own recollections, his participation in the exhibition Architektura v \u010desk\u00e9m n\u00e1rodn\u00edm d\u011bdictv\u00ed<\/em> [Architecture in the Czech National Heritage] was significant for him.<\/p>\n
